Quickie Review (Screams To Stream 3: Terror in Shuffle Mode)
It’s the first of October and Screams To Stream 3 continues to play in shuffle mode, not to mention it gets real bewitching thanks to the next selection of the playlist of your nightmarish dreams. Rooted in history and folklore, Robert Eggers’ atmospheric chiller sends us back to New England circa the 1630s, when many believed in one god, believed that committing sin is a severe punishment and when a family begins to tear apart at the seams when the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession start to plague them and the events begets paranoia and chaos. Much like the other A24 titles that appeared on Netflix recently, this is another one of the indie wunderkind’s titles that I’ve always wanted to check out but couldn’t due to not attempting to subscribe to Prime Video because of the price. Now that it’s on Netflix, I’m glad to have waited for the right moment to see it. The film has this sense of dread and fear permeating throughout and that feeling sets in you immediately and it pays off by the final act, where it becomes a brutal, bleak, bloody and downright terrifying fright fest. Plus, this film is responsible for introducing us to the ethereal angel known as Anya Taylor-Joy, who turns in a remarkable screen debut performance all the way to the end, which could be the most memorable and hauntingly sad ending in recent memory. If you’re looking for a true bone chiller, then check out The Witch (or The VVitch: An New England Folktale) on Netflix for that satisfying chill to the bone. And beware of Black Philip.
