The Beach House is a Lovecraftian style horror movie, obviously taking its main influence from the classic Color Out of Space. We focus on a young couple holidaying in a beach house, only to have their fun interrupted first by another couple who happen to be there, and then by some strange ecological creeping horror taking over the vicinity. The film takes a while to get going, which is fine because this time is well used by establishing the characters;…

The filmmakers got a smoke machine and a dream and just said screw it, let's make a movie.

This is so unexplainably bad and it's not even funny. Like, I can't believe I wasted my time watching this, I thought that it's going to be like Cabin Fever but this is so much worse. So much could've been done with a concept like this but they still managed to make it boring. Boo!👎

Saw this one yesterday afternoon and wrote it off as a waterlogged Color Out of Space.

And then lying in bed, late last night, I started running some of the more disturbing scenes through my head - the walk into the ocean, the beached jellyfish, the thing in the basement - and a suffocating dread began to creep over me. I wondered how I could’ve ever thought it was a good idea to live on an island, completely surrounded by the…

Life is a beach. And then you die.

Klimawandelhorror is the new Black: Weil „The Beach House“ sein Publikum über lange Zeit im Unklaren darüber lässt, was hier wirklich Phase ist und lediglich auf Dialog-Ebene immer wieder kleine Andeutungen über sein Leitmotiv macht, bleibt das konstante Gefühl von Unbehagen und Bedrohung über weite Strecken intakt, bis dann (unter fast völliger Umgehung eines zweiten Akts) das Grauen erstaunlich abrupt und effektiv losbricht.

Ebenso abrupt und effektiv endet „The Beach House“ dann…

Moments of genuine dread, a stomach churning sequence of body horror, and a cool ending. Between these, I found myself losing interest. Much of the awkward unease of the opening premise is just misdirection, and once the fog rolls in on the film, it not only felt aimless, but became a visual blob. The driving sequence makes good use of the effect at least. The dialogue felt rough for me too, just kinda stiff. Not a bad debut, but leaves plenty of room to grow.

If poor Jordy Verrill had been attacked by the sea instead of by space, his journey may have looked a lot like ‘The Beach House.’ Good thing for Jordy that Romero and King had the common sense to make his story under 30 minutes long because ‘The Beach House’ moves as slow as it’s cum-spewing zombies!
