Surely it was a sort of test reel for The Witch, most of the shots reminded me of it.
By the way, I think Eggers is one of the most promising directors of the last years

"I didn't mean to."
Two Brothers, Tom (Ethan Sailor) and Jake (Griffin Fox Smith), who live with their grandmother near the woods, have a troubled relationship ...
Brothers is a short film written and directed by Robert Eggers.
This short film was made by Eggers to convince investors he could do a feature film, and because he hadn't directed anything recently, and lacked confidence, so Eggers had to convince himself as well.
It worked, obviously, and Eggers received the funding to direct his fist feature film, The Witch (my review), which became a big hit.
In conclusion, Brothers is nicely filmed, but probably would leave anyone puzzled who doesn't know this is basically a proof of concept for another movie.

“PUT IT UP THERE… NOW.”
Robert continues to deliver, this heavily reminded me of The VVitch which makes sense since this was used by Eggers to get funding to make that film. The tale of two brothers who don’t seem to get along and their mischievous adventures which end in an unfortunate way. Not as captivating as his previous short but still enjoyed this. Very simple, effective, sound design is greatly done and the cinematography is admirable, as always. 3 shorts in and Robert must have some sort of fixation with fonts, they’re beautiful nonetheless. Solid film.

I'm a big fan of the style of Robert Eggers' filmmaking. I love the Witch and I love The Lighthouse even more. This short film was made because Robert Eggers had a difficult time getting financed to make his debut feature film, The Witch. So, he made this short film to show his skills and abilities.
Robert Eggers has a very distinct style and you can even see it in this earlier short film. And his films always deliver an emotional blow by the end.
