Fernando Pelaez Rovalo’s review published on Letterboxd:
Saw this one again and liked it even less. It’s fun, but it also doesn’t have a lot going for it. The Last Jedi (which I really like) at least explored new territory and had interesting themes in it. This one relies so heavily on fan service that it’s so hard to find any actual value in it. As someone who loves the saga and the lore behind it, I guess I can enjoy myself seeing all the callbacks to previous movies (even if it’s cheap as hell). However, it’s disappointing to see that fan service is all that makes this movie kinda work. This feels so much like a product, rather than the work and thoughts of someone with an idea. Again, it can be fun, but it really leaves nothing to take back home. The first two installments in the new trilogy (though different from one another) work because one reminds people why Star Wars is great and the other one challenges the idea to take it into new and exciting directions (if you are not going to change, what even is the point of telling a story). This one feels so stupid because it thinks that showing stuff you remember it’s equal to a good story. I remember the emperor, but I really don’t need to see him come in so out of left field. I wish we could all go back to 2015, where everyone was so excited about the idea of more Star Wars. By this point, it’s hard to say what it really means to people. I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed.
Side Note: The Force is now an excuse for lazy writing.
