A sleazy, disgusting, yet somehow still vibe-heavy 1970s LA gives way to one of the most clever scripts of the 2010s. Right off the bat, an intriguing dynamic is set up. Here you have Jackson Healy, played by Russel Crowe, a classic example of an ultra badass who beats people up and then collects money from them. On the other side, there's Holland March, played by Ryan Gosling, a goof of a private detective who is never self-aware about what is going on. Classic pairing, but there's a twist here that really sells the tone of this movie; despite the fact they are overall played in the way I described them, the approach to the tone of it by Crowe and Gosling actually flips the end result on its head. Crowe is such a serious badass that it's extremely comedic, and Gosling is so goofy that it's genuinley pathetic. And this manufactures a highly unique edge to the film, as well as one that feels way more accurate to how this kind of partnership would function in real life.

Gosling in particular really steals the show here with my favorite performance of his yet. Just as many times as I laughed at his absurd physical humor and high pitched screams, I fely empathy for his situation of being a "bad person" and his clear inner desire to be a more serious detective. His relationship with his daughter was way more emotional than I was anticipating, there were multiple points where I found myself hooked to the screen watching them grow apart and grow together. In fact the whole movie is way more human that I was expecting going in, which is benefitted by the unique tone I mentioned earlier. A comedic riot fest with tones of soul behind it, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘎𝘶𝘺𝘴 is definitley worth any film lovers time.
