I first want to start by giving praise to the marketing team for this movie. This was some of the best marketing I’ve seen for a movie in quite sometime and I’m sure it got a lot of people interested into this movie and more movies, especially horror, need to follow suite.
As far as the film goes, I really enjoyed my time with this one. Im a sucker for detective type movies, especially with a serial killer being the antagonist, and this movie really does a good job with capturing this eerie and off putting tone for 99% of the run time, and that’s mainly due to the directing and lead performance. Majority of the movie are a bunch of long/wide still shots that make you feel at distance with the characters on screen but you can feel their empty surroundings are just waiting to catch them while there slipping. Maika Monroe does a fantastic job adding to the tone because she has such a quiet and still performance but with her expressions and shaky voice, you can feel her fear right there with her.
This is one of those movies that I will have to watch again to be able to have all my thoughts wrapped but what I was mixed on was some of the middle act and there are a lot of questions that kind of go unanswered, there are some other things but that gets into spoiler territory, and I think everyone should just go into this with leveled expectations and as blindly as possible. Definitely one of the surprises of the year so far
