Reoccurring images in variation. Memetic in the most gloriously haunting way possible. Copies and photographs manipulated for twisted and dark means. Only spreading the sickness seems like the answer because it's more dangerous to break a pattern than it is to follow it.
Despite this, The Ring breaks many of the horror cliches of its time. The film starts with the trademark slasher cold open and, as the plot unravels, the story goes beyond the fate of those teens in a cabin in the woods. It's more of mystery laced with a dense fog of cynicism and surrealistic horror.
The film's iconography has become so iconic, which, intentionally or otherwise, is just what Samara wanted.
