felt at first glance the weakest of Malick's early work, merely because it has the most straightforward and simplistic narrative. however, I'm quickly coming around to it as I think more. Martin Sheen's Kit strikes me as one of the most fascinating characters I've seen in a while -- no motive is given for the murders he commits, just as there is no reason Holly should join him on his trip through the Great Plains. and yet there's something so resonant when the deputy tells Kit he looks like James Dean and Kit gives one of his only real smiles of the film. a truly American film, where dying a famous outlaw means so much more than living a quiet life collecting garbage or feeding cows.
