There's such an apathetic energy to the entire thing. The Marvels is frustrating because lots are interesting here; from the body-swapping, Monica/Carol's estranged relationship, Kamala's arc being the expression "never meet your heroes," and Carol's regrets all make for solid thematic material but none of it is developed and all of it wasted. Everything that could've made it great is within reach, it's a shame it turned out the way it did.
Iman Vellani is incredibly charming and an absolute star. She revitalizes every scene she's in, and honestly, I found her star-struckness way more believable and enamouring than Tom Holland's rather annoying turn in Civil War (I said what I said, don't @ me). If the MCU pans out how they hint here (and god knows when those scenes will pay off), I'm glad she'll have a way bigger role.
There are pockets of moments that shine and the body-swapping is quite the inventive gimmick. I like this more than Captain Marvel, this has far more interesting aspects. Fumbled execution aside, what's here makes for a really light and at times fun watch. Basically, it's a good background movie (not derogatory). It's not Marvel's best but come on, it isn't its worst either, lol.
