4th installment shows the apes are still strong
w/ in theaters with mom
i was originally gonna watch this thursday but i decided to be funny and take my mom to the most dad movie ever on mothers day.
while i do think this lacks matt reeves dark undertones and just vibe in general of the last two i still think wes ball and the team did a amazing continuing the reboot series with this installment. throughout the whole movie i was just really engaged with the story and characters. noa is a great protagonist to follow along seeing him learn more about the world and events before. proximus caesar is also a fantastic villain. yeah sure it does take half the movie to show up but when he shows up he fucking steals the show. seeing this mf twist the words of caesar and kevin durand amazing menacing performance just fucking got me excited everytime he was on screen. the other apes like raka are pretty cool too and i liked them a lot.
now as usual for the reboot series the vfx remains spectacular as always. the apes as usual look so real and expressive. they respond well with light and like water that i don’t think a single shot in this movie looked jarring. whenever there’s a action scene the movement never feels laggy or too smooth it just feels natural which speaking of which the action fucking rocks. i felt every hit and it’s fast paced and intense.
if i were to say my problems now the movie doesn’t really justify the 2hr and 25 minute runtime in some areas. there could’ve easily been some areas they could’ve trimmed and nothing would be missed. the humans in this are not very interesting at all like mae who despite her actress giving a pretty good performance feels like a plot device for the whole movie never feeling completely developed. trevathan i literally sometimes forgot even existed he just is not memorable at all.
but besides that i still had a really fun time with kingdom of the planet of the apes. i’m wondering to see if the sequels will improve on this like with the matt reeves sequels to rise in the previous trilogy. time will tell if this movie does well and disney/fox don’t interfere with the creatives.
