Aamna’s review published on Letterboxd:
I can finally say I watched Interstellar in cinemas !!! Can you imagine I watched it on my PHONE the first time lol. Makes me wish letterboxd had a top 5 favourites instead of only top 4.
I know everyone says it but the docking scene oh myyyyyy. Such a good climax. No time for caution as the score was perfect.
I really like the take on Murphy’s law, which is anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. But murph represents it differently where if something can happen, it will (good or bad). And that there’s potential for both setbacks and breakthroughs. We see humanity’s struggle to survive/“find our place in the stars” against dire odds. All the challenges the crew faced and environmental struggles on earth. The whole “anything that can go wrong” is seen in their missions, but humanity’s persistence to survive is shown in overcoming these challenges. So ultimately showing the importance of persistence and emphasises hope in the face of adversity. Also murph living a terrible life without her father, but then being the one to solve the gravity equation through persistence and so allowing humanity to escape earth. So positive outcomes are just as inevitable as the negative ones. This theme is really comforting and a big fat hug !!!
Also the fact that the ship itself was called endurance, while enduring time dilation, harsh conditions, bleakness of space etc.
Also I love the repetition of do not go gentle into that good night. Not surrendering to circumstances and pushing forwards.
I liked the exploration of darker sides to human nature through Mann’s character, e.g. individuality when it comes to survival (even at the cost of others). But I couldn’t really connect to his actions, it was unexplained and felt clumsy.
I liked the view of love too, and how it transcends time and space like gravity. How it’s not limited by death and not just a human experience. Brand talked about how it persists across such distances of life and death (all while still not being considered observable) which was interesting. Her intuition to go to Edmund’s planet due to her love for Edmund (despite logic saying no), which may have guided their mission. Brand is probably the most emotionally complex female character from Nolan (that I’ve seen) lol. And then on top of this coopers love for murph connecting them through the dimensions, allowing him to communicate w her. Of course the full circle moment was v iconic. So all in all love is shown as a guiding force??? But goes beyond observable scientific understanding.
I couldn’t get behind the whole, oh we rebuilt everything as it was on this other planet in 70-90 years (or however long it was sue me). But I get that’s the whole fiction part of sci-fi. I say this like it’s the only unrealistic thing. Idk leave me alone. Cooper mumbled a LOT and watching it without subtitles made me notice this even more.
