Piles up enough heavy teen drama to fill half a season of Degrassi, bereft of any meaningful gravitas or character development, instead occupying these extreme emotional spaces with occasionally downright groan-inducing musical choices that are so in-the-moment I felt like I was officially too old for this Pitchfork Best Of 2010s Spotify Playlist Sponsored By 1800 Tequila shit--it honestly got me thinking how insufferable my review of Garden State would have been if this site existed in 2004 lmao. The songs on here are actually pretty great but context is seemingly an afterthought so who cares, and its best songs are used in far superior movies to far greater, more evocative effect. The Trent/Atticus OST is good, though.
Things settle down in the final hour or so of the film which I didn't expect at all once Lucas Hedges appears, and its themes of forgiveness and acceptance are communicated with a shockingly endearing sweetness and clarity its frentic first half is sorely missing. The performances on this are also really good given the material, and it's visually top-notch, although its appealing aesthetics make me wish I was watching Moonlight or The Florida Project instead.
