Intermittently tangential, semi-autobiographical Taiwanese masterpiece where Hsiao- Hou warmly welcomes knowing and not-knowing eyes to a timeless Taiwan while deeply reflecting on the repercussions of death, impulsive youth, culture and tradition in a cataclysm of psychological clashes. Once the paternal chair becomes empty, it is impossible to glance at it without a feeling of loss and nostalgia, while simultaneously feeling the urge that someone eventually will have to fill the shoes of the lost ones. Similarly to Edward Yang, the exploration of generational gaps is intimate to the bone; however, the portrayal of mortality and mourning are unapologetic and interrupts routine (whether morally deviated or not) like a stormless thunder. The expertise of the director to capture time from a human perspective is unequalled. This is pure, unaltered cinema, embracing life while being tempted by the fire of social pressure and sociopolitical injustices.
My mind and heart shall never forget that street with the tree growing, watching the generations pass, where a handful of money was once buried next to it... Transmitting nostalgia for a time you never lived and a place you never lived in is a gift from God, and I have witnessed it once more.
