Sympathy for the twisted; people expecting the Project X (2012) of this decade were confused to no end, but so were the ones expecting a Fincher twist. The film has been reasonably condemned for “free provocation” and Keoghan’s onscreen presence as an ominous humanlike entity keeps... bothering me. It’s never engrossing. There is a prevailing intention of painting the high class as caricatures while a lower-class member infiltrates the pretentious headquarters. This will cause many people to draw Parasite (2019) parallelisms, but the real connection should be made with Teorema (1968) and maybe with Miike’s most perverse film, Visitor Q (2001), a fantastic dissection of the disintegration of family dynamics when an external factor enters uninvited (Pasolini’s intentions were far more political). If the film gives pretty distinguishable vignettes of the entire film, can you call it “foreshadowing”? If you can’t, can you call the film’s resolution “a twist”?
As confusing as the screenplay is, Jacob Elordi and Rosamund Pike are quite stellar for what the writing demands. The slurp sound will never leave your memory, but if this is a pseudo-provocateur attempt to make a revolting thriller, I gotta say, it turned out to be a dark comedy, and it was fun.
Also, Austin-Powers-like ending.
