The love for expressionism and fascination towards bugs will never leave Del Toro’s soul. My compatriot is killing it in the animation department now. The circumstances that lead him to add his name to the film title to establish a differentiation from the maligned Disney version was a nice tongue-in-cheek unforeseeable outcome: sign it and let all people know this is your own child of a film.
This restores the stop-motion quality in Hollywood territory all the way back to Coraline (2009) levels: mythological creatures, dark magic and the beloved wooden boy performing a “caca” musical number in the very face of a disgusting Fascist. This is cinema. The Biblical reference to Jonah is not disposed of, and the capability of something seemingly inert having a better grasp of the value of life and human moral values better than humans might be something redone to death (we have no problem accepting this in Cameron’s Terminator sequel), and still fits perfectly into the arc of the wooden character in this very free re-imagining of a beloved classic, not exploiting musical numbers to unbearable Disney levels, but only intervening for adorable character development exposition.
