It’s the literal definition of transforming a procedural mystery thriller into a romance story with philosophical layers about the implications of emotional entanglement with a stranger. If that stranger is related to your professional job, to what extent can you separate business with pleasure? Park explores the chain of consequences caused by a fractured emotional state finding a questionable sense of comfort in the wrong person. However, the film never stays in the comfort zone like the character does out of primal impulses; it works splendorously as a procedural dissection, but then one is submerged into unpredictable catharsis, a sense of detachment and loneliness, and how an individual tries to seal that off. One never sees what is behind the curtain unless the whole attrezzo falls down by accident; it is not part of the plan. It is Park’s plan, however, and accompanied with a staggering cinematography throughout that employs sky shots when we adopt the perspective of a higher, divine being that can judge humanity and its justice, to upwards/downwards shots to represent experience and hierarchy compared to others, and the best score of the year, Park creates a multi-faceted exploration of primal human essence with unexpected splashes of brilliant humor, ironies and absurd situations because that is exactly how we are.
