At least the first one had a number of clever spots circumventing the "origin story" formula with clever fourth-wall breaking and going beyond, from budget references to mocking every possible regurgitation of overused villainous motivations, superhero stunts and convenient plot machinations. It even had arguably Stan Lee's second best cameo. You don't escape your genre and result as game-changer if you mock by doing, at the end of the day, the same thing. In the best of the cases, you're only demonstrating you are self-aware.

This one regurgitates what the first one did, becoming both a disappointment and a contradiction. The spirit is not entirely lost; the mockery is there, and so is the anti-conventionalisms fist in the air, but for the latter, it uses other conventionalisms to try to counterattack the former. The "adult" humor has devolved to a type of humor that only in the hands of Jim Carrey doesn't come off as cringe with The Mask (1994), and the clearest example is that both do an Oscars joke, and The Mask simply makes it funnier and better. The villain is mediocre at best compared to the predecessor and most of it is forgettable, save for the final act where the time-travel gimmick is used very idiotically.

We need a Domino's solo flick.
