“A woman under the influence of Alzheimer disease”. Halfway through, the title becomes less of an emotional punchline and more a vivid nightmare any man will wish never to go through. In spite of a poorly written screenplay and some Hallmark-like technical qualities scattered throughout, Christie consolidates herself as a queen of acting regardless of the material at hand and embodies potent emotional manifestations of a memory that desperately tries to recollect, rebuild, remember... Names and faces beginning to be obscured by “the bliss of oblivion” and become meaningless, and yet consciousness remains, and the soul declares a stay in the physical body until the time comes for the last breath to take.
Pinsent is at his most cathartically powerful, and every time I dared to get in his shoes, I was terrified and decided to remain as the viewer. His gradual interactions increase in desperation standing in the line that divides the realm of love and denial. To what point can one declare himself faithful in the face of the torment of forgetfulness?
Good start for Polley, releasing this at the age of 27 with sincerity, and with the valuable support of Egoyan who certainly saw a bright future ahead of her.
