Edgar Cochran ✝️’s review published on Letterboxd:
The 3D revolution came in 2009 with the ultimate Matrix/Pocahontas milkshake where the CGI characters had more depth than their human counterparts and I was part of a gigantic praise I could never understand while leaving the theater. It took an average span of 3 years for a shocking percentage of people to say: "After a rewatch, I realized it wasn't that good; I was a victim of the eye-candy". It is widely amusing that the sequel seems to be self-aware of this and focuses almost entirely on the anthropomorphic Smurfs for most of the running time, now playing with the Jonah allegory (many films concerning whales this year, huh), and seemingly unavoidable intertextuality: the Titanic (1997) references are slapped so hard into our faces that I am surprised the 4DX movie theater attendees didn’t leave their sits in a coma.
As I was told by close film buds, the film retains its entertainment value when seen on the big screen and is intended for it, since translating something of this visual magnitude to any smaller format will be a chore. That doesn’t speak so well about the sequel’s self-sustainability, especially when we had to wait 13 years for... this?
Darn it, Cameron; you even had the guts to “swim” in your money re-releasing Titanic in the same year for its “25th anniversary”, strategically planned during Valentine’s Day and a couple of months after this. Well, I hope the third installment aims for higher altitudes, because the freaking resurrection of a villain left the plot unmodified, and so, what is the point?
Remember the The Abyss (1989) days? They are long gone.
55/100
