Argentina, 1985

Les mando un abrazo extendido a todos mis hermanos Argentinos y de todo Latinoamérica.

How much progress have we made since then? The use of oppression, violence, torture and disappearances as political tools has not banished from the face of the earth, and this is a single testament from a country among many in Latin American that screamed for her children more than 30 years ago. Torture in particular is a very effective tool to extract confessions from the victim just to make the suffering stop: it is extremely useful for justifying a war because the victim was (supposedly) a foreign spy, to defame a particular public figure or random citizen to undermine a nation’s reputation, or simply to apply local and national policies and reforms.

Santiago Mitre explores not only the perspective of the victims and the perpetrators, but also of the judicial justice system; nowadays, it is harder to witness trials like this being conducted in Latin America. The common saying in Mexico is “presumed guilty until proven otherwise” and there is a documentary with the same (partial) name out there that was banned by the Mexican government, allowing piracy and social media to flourish. What is left to hide? Why do you hide it?

It is clear to me how God decides the ministry for every soul: many abuse their power, but in the case of Julio César Strassera, He chose a man with enough character to understand the ludicrous dimensions of the trial he was challenging to have, the iron-fisted wife that found the telephone threats annoying rather than terrifying, and a son with a wittiness and perception out of the ordinary. In the film Strassera presents himself as a man that rides alone: “There is no we; I am doing this”, and at the end, it is his family and his exceptional, very young team that helped him to carry the titanic ordeal thrughout.

It is obvious which scenes were altered for dramatic purposes, especially Strassera’s family dynamics, but the family was more than real, and so is Stassera’s legacy, may he rest in peace.

When we are called as Davids, it is not difficult to fight against the Goliaths of the system: it is impossible. That is where God intervenes.

The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord.
-Proverbs 21:31

May all political prisoners and family victims of military dictatorships find justice on earth before they reach heaven.
