A charming musical with two amazing central performances from Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The story, though slow, is moving and does a great job of balancing the humour with the sad. The characters Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) are well written and the way that one slowly changes because of the other is cleverly done. The ending was disappointing because it seemed that the conflict between Sebastian and Mia came out of nowhere and could have been handled a lot better.
Stone and Gosling are excellent in this film. The early scenes where they use banter as a form of flirtation is genuinely fun. They are backed up well by J.K. Simmons, Finn Wintock, Callie Hernandez, Rosemarie Dewitt and John Legend.
The cinematography is gorgeous, especially the use of colour and long takes.
