Society is a bizarre B horror flick. When I say bizarre, I mean… WTF.
While everything beforehand could be seen as simply build up for it’s outrageous third act with nothing to it—and honestly, it could’ve been trimmed down a bit—there is this paranoid mystery slowly brewing, and it is built up pretty well for what the third act has in store. And that third act IS the main attraction. The insane body horror imagery mixed in with this surreal nightmarish execution, and with the thematic context of the story made the third act outrageous, hilarious, creepy, bizarre, disgusting, and fucked up. The thematics are a bit too on the nose though, especially with a character blatantly stating the themes during the climax. Also, the ending doesn’t really feel like it’s concluding anything with its themes.
The film doesn’t take itself seriously at all, it is full of 80’s cheese, and over the top horror shenanigans with a slickness to it, which made this a weird and wild ride I could get on board with.
