it very much lives up to the hype! but not to the how the media is hyping it up. it’s a very very smart crime thriller that makes you think and i don’t think that’s a reason to dislike this.
it is a dreadful hour and forty minutes, the weight of the story never lets up a bit. maika monroe is spectacular (she almost reminds me of pattinson’s batman ??? more on that later) she leads the movie with ease and her acting is top tier. nic cage as longlegs is just fucking creepy - not horrifying but the kind of scary that you see in a nightmare or just a guy that creeps you out on the street. he’s a freak, he’s psychotic, and he eats up the screen time.
the religious and supernatural elements are where the minus 0.5 stars come in. i think they either needed to push it further or take it down a smidge - or maybe just religious or just supernatural. there was enough to make you question, “was that real?” or am i just anxious from the movie ((prisoners coded)). i do think they added something special to the movie though so i prefer to have them in to add to the uneasy energy. that being saiddddd - they do end up meshing the two and allow you to make conclusions which i didn’t find to be annoying.
silence of the lambs but gorier and less grounded in reality meets matt reeves’ the batman (2022) crime noir vibe. i fuckin loved it.
