Michal Draker’s review published on Letterboxd:
My excitement for Longlegs was off the charts! I literally travelled to a different city to see this movie, something I've never done in the 31 years I've been alive.
This amount of excitement can be however a double-edged sword. And I think maybe not being able to see the movie opening weekend and see the discourse around the movie over the opening weekend toned down and adjusted my expectations of the movie.
Only for it to absolutely rock!
Longlegs is not a scary movie, to me at least. But it is a heavy movie, a movie that oozes with dread and uneasiness. Its terror stems from the mundane way the violence is depicted and from the tense nature of the storytelling and intense visuals.
This may be more of a personal experience, but the scene I'm about to describe totally sank me into my seat breathlessly from utter dread. I am a big dude in my thirties, yet I'm terrified of leaving any door open because there's something uneasy to me about an empty doorframe. Longlegs has a scene where Lee is on the phone with her mom, with a doorframe positioned behind her just to the side of her taking up a portion of the screen. The way my eyes were going back and forth between Maika Monroe's face and the doorframe in anticipation of something or someone appearing might've given me an eye strain. This scene made me so anxious and stressed. And the movie has plenty of scenes like this, where the scene just consumes you with harrowing anticipation of what is about to happen... despite the fact, that I figured out pretty early on the culmination of the movie. But Oz Perkins just had that magic evil touch to make every second and minute of this film just utterly sinister.
Longlegs will stay on my mind for quite some time, leaving this grimy feeling you want to wash away. Tonight I genuinely may be haunted by Nicolas Cage and his portrayal of Longlegs. While on the pleasant side of things, I am forever in awe of the talents Maika Monroe is showing in horror and it was really fucking cool to see Blair Underwood on the big screen!
Unless we have some unforeseen certified movie bangers in the next few months, Longlegs has just secured its spot in my TOP 10 of the year for sure! Great, great, great movie!
