What if you could go back and speak to your younger self? What would you reveal? Would you warn them of things to come, to try to change things? Or would your advice be more vague? My Old Ass tackles this concept in a funny yet heartfelt manner. I hesitate to call this a favorite of mine, but would by lying if I said I wasn’t moved a little by the story. This is such a simple script done pretty well, boosted by stellar performances from a well-rounded cast. Aubrey Plaza may headline but her presence is not as significant as you might think. Maisy Stella is the real show stealer; funny, charming, and acting exactly like an eighteen year old would. If there’s one thing My Old Ass does best it’s the teen dialogue - rarely do films get this right. The attitudes, the words, the cool factor… it all adds a touch of authenticity.
Muskoka Lakes, Ontario was a fantastic location to shoot this in. There’s something immediately nostalgic about how the camera captures the water and the feeling of one last summer before life begins.
Bonus points for subverting expectations when it comes to characters named Chad.
