Pixar’s sophomore film A Bug’s Life takes the structure of Toy Story and mixes it with the tried and true Seven Samurai type narrative. The world of bugs is a great foundation for quirky characters and Pixar logic and I was hooked instantly. I’ve never actually seen A Bug’s Life so watching this for the first time was really fun. Pixar’s animation improved a lot in the three years between this and Toy Story, noticeably in the shadows and shading from light sources. I see both as sister films that established Pixar’s sense of storytelling and style that they’d follow for years to come. While I prefer their later films, there’s something enjoyably simple about A Bug’s Life. Not surprising when quite a few pages are taken out of Kurosawa’s book.
