I adored the book (and Emma Morley) near-on fifteen years ago and, breaking my own rule of never comparing the FILM and the BOOK (as one can't be BETTER than the other because they are - quite clearly different beasts) I stand by my assertion that the 2011 cinematic incarnation was, in fact, awful...
...well, ok, a competent film perhaps, but not what I wanted for a screen adaptation of a dearly beloved novel (even though Nicholls himself wrote the screenplay)...
...Anne Hathaway (often great) is NOT Emma Morley...
...Ambika Mod, on the other hand, most assuredly is!
This eminently bingeable fest of will they/won't they as life 'just happens' over 20 years is great - not quite perfect - but very well realised, thanks to great leads, quality support and assured direction - and a wonderfully evocative soundtrack to boot. At last!
