Knew I was going to like this from the opening 30 minutes - the slow, quiet, hopeful build, through to the horrors of the Horizon attack...
...passion or vanity project? Doesn't matter - Costner is here to tell a story - a dusty trail cinematically well trodden, certainly, but there's a class to his craft that keeps the minutes flying by; the landscape, the ambition, the (in)humanity...
...it's not perfect, but its flaws kinda make it great. Too many strands? Maybe - but the final 5 minute montage of what's to come shows this for the bravely creative groundwork that rewards audience attention; corny and a little melodramatic? Guilty - but this is a genre rife with such tropes, and if anyone has earned the right to indulge then it's that man under the wide-brimmed hat staring off to the horizon.
