Not sure why we needed this given Kapadia's excellent 2015 doc?
It’s a very generous three stars - on another day its vanilla approach (Amy was clearly anything but) might grate more. As a 'film' it does a satisfactory job: Abela has presence, Manville is wonderful, the music creation & influence take centre stage and the melodrama is thankfully kept to a minimum; oddly, Blake comes out of it quite differently to how I previously understood him - someone in prison for serious assault is hardly the cheeky chappy scoundrel that O’Connell’s performance suggests…
...in striking opposition to its subject BTB feels somewhat sanitised and rather unsure of its message, too episodic to really get a handle on the unique talent AW had and the events that led to the addictions that brought about her demise...
...it's ok as these 'talented person makes a series of increasingly self-destructive choices' films go, but not nearly as interesting or engaging as the aforementioned documentary.
