This anime is one of the most complex things I've ever watched.
I'm going start with the story. The story is very complex but it doesn't spell it out for you. You have to figure it out by yourself and it mostly tells it story with visuals (for example like under the skin and angels egg). The main character is also very intriguing, we don't know what is going on with her, why she's acting the way she does, and we don't know what she plans on doing next. Lain is probably one of the most interesting characters I've seen in an anime.
It also has a great atmosphere. The use of sound, music, and animation makes this anime calming yet eerie to watch. Some of the topics like obsession with the internet and internet persona's are even relevant today. Just like perfect blue the topics of this become more and more relevant over time. It's honestly mind boggling how prophetic some of the themes in this are, all the way to how conspiracy theories can grow and evolve to something that people might even believe to be factual.
It's an anime that requires multiple viewings to mostly understand, but it can also be left open for interpretation. It's not for everyone but i feel like you should atleast watch this once for the experience. You might find it fascinating or extremely boring.
Also that opening is phenomenal.
