Exceptional cast, obviously, but the neon synth worship feels at odds with the grimey rough-and-tumble attitudes of the vets caught in NEON ASSAULT ON VFW. Certainly entertaining enough – and I’m obviously a mark for synth and neon – but lathering something in dated aesthetic fetishism without actually contextualizing it in character, theme or at least some sense of awareness ain’t enough for me. Enough genre homages. Think about why you love these things. Expand what is possible now. We have what came before. Use your love and admiration to create something new. Or at least get more inventive than plastering neon lights over blood, sweat and vulgarity. Could’ve kicked major ass.
