Sometimes all you need in cinema is beautiful people with impeccable chemistry just flirting with each other while pining for one another until they can be themselves together! It helps that you really believe these people actually enjoy one another's company. For the life of me I will never figure out why the post-Wick run of Leitch involved a bunch of protagonists who hate each other. Just let them like each other! It doesn't mean there can't be conflict! And not every movie needs likable protagonists with dynamite chemistry but if you're making an action blockbuster, it will sure help things!
Yeah it's probably too long and contains the recurring issue of pacing familiar to this director's line of work... but I loved this. It was so much fun. Ridiculously charming and so obviously made with massive love for the craft people that make movies like this possible. I would have settled for a pretty good action movie but while heading into the back half, I thought to myself "This is cool but since it's about making a movie with an action movie crashing through it all, it'd be nice to see some movie related set pieces-" AND GUESS WHAT HAPPENED.
This was a blast. Saw it at my local, smaller AMC in Dolby and the audience was keyed into this all the way through. The laughs, the applause, everything I go to big summer movies for. That was nice. Some older fella next to me, probably a child of the 80s, seemed to really enjoy the needle drops. He did the white man overbite in his seat and everything. I hope he's having a good week.
One last thing: They are absolutely using this to spring board the conversations an attempt to get stunt nominations at the Academy Awards and they're god damn right to do so. It's overdue. Make it fucking happen, already.
