i really don't know. sorting out my feelings on it. garland's best (and truly tense) direction with some empty, gestural writing. by the end i just can't help but wonder what the point of it all was? he's so much better than this.
i was going to write more but almost a week on and i'm really just shrugging at this. momentarily effective through sheer shock and awe. it's not apolitical, as much as garland talked up. i find that garland's nihilism tends to work within the confines of genre with sociopolitical ideas, even when they lack a greater context. they work within the moment of their presentation because they are examined through lenses just outside of our reality (SUNSHINE), or the evolution/destruction of our reality (ANNIHILATION). here though? i really don't see what people got out of it.
terrific performances though.
garland will probably crush those 28 Days Later sequels too.
