It's strange to describe a film about a murder spree as melancholy and sweet, but it kind of is, as only Terrence Malick could make it. It's been noted by many that Malick loves a good voiceover, but here it's used quite beautifully, to get inside the head of Sissy Spacek's character Holly who is quiet and shy, but becomes less of an enigma and more of a person through her thoughts and insights on herself, Kit (Martin Sheen), and the journey they make together.
It's a shame that after Days of Heaven, Malick stopped making films just about people, and starting making films about themes and ideas, cause this, him at his simplest, is probably the best thing he's done. Not epic stories about the creation of the earth, not retellings of Pocahontas, nor 3-hour war films, just a simple tale of two people who go on a road trip and kill a couple of people along the way.
