Star Wars: The Last Jedi 2017

Let’s just say it’s no coincidence that the people who say this “isn’t Star Wars” have awful opinions of what Star Wars is supposed to be.

Where The Force Awakens excels in delivering the greatest hits, The Last Jedi is an album of new stuff, retaining classic story elements while showing the maturity that the 8th movie in a series should have. Addressing the war in Star Wars being one of the most controversial, along with the audaciousness of showing that a hero can be someone other than a handsome brunette man with a chiseled jaw.

The strongest metaphor for why this movie is so great (and Rian’s well on his way to being an all time great American filmmaker, something even more obvious in a post-Knives Out world) comes towards the end with Luke and Yoda, reunited at last.

The Last Jedi burns the tree, but saves the books.

Destroying to create, ridding old roots so new ones can grow in their place. The books stay though. They aren’t page turners sure, but you have to know where you’ve been to know where you’re going.

See you around, kid.

Let the past die. Kill it if you have to.

We are what they grow beyond.

Again I acknowledge that like hardcore fans of everything, the people who hate this hate it for the wrong reasons. Getting into the psychology of it all feels like it would take a lifetime, but the gist is (again) this: you have to destroy to create.

Buried bodies become fertilizer to the grass, where new trees grow. Stories are the same way.

Psyched for The Rise of Skywalker, in case that wasn’t already obvious.
