Michael Stuhlbarg and Elisabeth Moss are coincidentally my stock answers for the question of who the most underrated actors in Hollywood are, so it was quite fun to see them act off each other. I've liked Moss more in other things, but I'm not sure if I can say the same for Stuhlbarg. The jump he took from being a gregarious, warm professor-of-your-dreams to a cold fury in the dissertation scene and then back again was amazing. It's when, not if, he wins an Oscar.
For me, Shirley at its best when it was about the tension between them and their houseguests. Moments where it dipped into surreality lost me. Overall, it was good!
