I don’t know why I had the impression this was some uproarious comedy, it feels like it’s smack dab in the middle of Wilder’s work tonally between Sunset Blvd and Some Like It Hot. Kinda bummed me out at one point. Maybe because “being too polite to stop a bunch of other people from fucking in your house and you’re sleepy” is my greatest nightmare. It’s also more of a Christmas movie than a New Year’s one, but I’m glad New Year’s gave me a push to finally check it off the list. Lea Seydoux owes her entire career to how fine Shirley MacLaine looks in this movie.
