I didn’t really know what to expect going into this as I’m not that familiar with Shyamalan’s work apart from Split and often hear hear mixed opinions about him as a director, but despite these initial worries I ended up really loving it and came out appreciating Shyamalan’s talent as a storyteller. I’m so glad that the twist wasn’t spoiled for me and I got to have the genuine experience of trying to guess the big reveal which managed to allude me until the end, but i looking back now and seeing the signs only makes me love it even more.
The Sixth Sense is never without tension, constantly building up the unnerving atmosphere until the big reveal and it has some genuinely scary moments that did get me. It also doesn’t rely on predictable jump scares but instead effectively focuses on psychological horror, such as the dread you feel knowing something bad or dangerous is about to happen and you are hopeless to stop it. The haunting score also complimented in adding to the tension and eeriness of the film and succeed in making my heart beat like an engine a couple times.
The performances were all incredible but this movie wouldn’t be possible without Haley's amazing performance as Cole, truly one of the greatest child performances I’ve ever seen with him being able to capture the vast amount of emotions of Cole and accurately depict his grief. Bruce Willis has what might be the best performance of his career and I don’t believe that’s recency bias talking as he absolutely nails it. This movie is so full of heart for a ghost story and is fundamentally about coping with grief, trauma and the fears of the unknown which I thought Shyamalan did a great job in portraying in Cole & Malcom’s characters. Overall it’s an incredible psychological thriller that never lost my attention and i really enjoyed the slower paced storytelling it follows.
