So morbidly funny in the first 30 minutes that the sappy cliches that hit later feel like they’re in a different movie. But overall, there’s so much charm and ingenuity that it won me over.
When movies like this come along, especially animated ones, it’s an interesting exercise in weaving unique storytelling and technique with commercial sensibilities. Some movies eschew the latter to great effect (looking at you Wall-E, the Iron Giant, Nightmare Before Christmas) and some do a remarkable job at balancing both (Puss in Boots, Spiderverse, the LEGO movie, the list goes on). I would love more movies like the former where they truly stand on their own as a piece of art that’s not concerned with anything related to their audience’s expectations, but the other category is a balancing act that requires extreme skill and precision, and I absolutely appreciate that as well. This is the category The Wild Robot falls into, and it’s a good one.
