THE NICE GUYS is a movie that is not as clever as it wants to be, nor as fun as it thinks it is. It feels like it is breaking a sweat trying to entertain us and hold all these balls in place. It is a misfire, but an enjoyable one. Taking place in the decadent year of 1977, the movie gives us, drinking, swearing, bad fashion, pornography and catalytic converters. It also gives us Crowe and Gosling trying to be Abbott and Costello (especially in one moment with Gosling, the comparison is unmistakable). They are both fine, but feel a little out of place. Gosling is busting his ass and hits a lot of his comedy beats, but whiffs a few as well. Crowe is solid, but looks a little uninvolved, but its clear that he likes the smaller moments (where he seems more alive) than the action beats. It is serviceable, but not a film I will remember fondly, kind of a one and done.
