Cinema isn't just a visual art form, it's also a narrative one, and that's where The Return fails. The cinematography is undeniably gorgeous, but that can't compensate for characters so tortured that they can't even speak to each other, rendering the interestingly expressed ideas about PTSD dramatically inert. Not even Fiennes and Binoche can save this, turning in some of their most phoned-in work in ages.
