It feels like Saoirse Ronan is giving an even better performance than what the film allows us to see, chopping her character arc to bits and pieces in its fractured flashbacks and nonlinear storytelling. She is still pretty great, though, and the climactic sequence with the swelling score and crashing ocean waves is pretty gorgeous.
