As a cinematic object, it lacks a bit too much context for the political process in Uganda, and it can’t really escape the “this happened, then this happened, then this happened” nature of the actual events.
But the fact that this film even exists AT ALL is such an incredible achievement that that almost doesn’t even matter. The fact that all this being filmed is what kept Bobi Wine alive - which he himself said at the post-screening Q&A - is enough to speak to the film’s importance. Wine is a bit critical of the film for not showing the full extent of the violence he, his staff, and his supporters suffered at the hands of the current political regime, but what’s there is still plenty awful to watch, and quite shocking in its brazenness.
And yes, OF COURSE the US sends hundreds of millions in “aid” to the Ugandan government every year. And this violence against opponents to the current ruler is what that money supports. It’s enough to make you sick.
