Easily Burton's best since SWEENEY TODD, in that it is a functional movie that I was able to sit down and watch. So do with that what you will.
Everything that I disliked about this really only serves to highlight how diamond cut the 1988 film is. Particularly how lean it is and how everything feels so cohesive, whilst never sacrificing getting a laugh almost every breath. There's plenty of good things here(the b&w sequence, O'Hara and all of her business, Dafoe's speech to his squad of troops with cue cards, soul train) that don't really come together on the whole. But those highs, combined with real effort by Burton to both focus on practical effects and make sure the CG he does use has some tangible quality to it, felt like just enough to push this over the line for me. Not exactly the triumphant return some might have hoped for, but acceptable.
