“I believe we did”
Genuinely what the fuck man, i can’t possibly do this film justice with words. Jesus Christ. Oppenheimer is the first of Nolan’s I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing in theatres and I’m glad, because you NEED to see this in a theatre. Possibly the best theatre experience I’ve ever had, if not first then absolutely top three.
The Trinity test. That sequence is when Oppenheimer instantly became a five star film. Ludwig Göransson‘s breathtaking score alongside the amazing cinematography from Hoyte van Hoytema, the intensity Nolan managed to create left me speechless. The expectation you have only to be left with dead silence was haunting.
The way Cillian Murphy embodies Robert Oppenheimer is unbelievable, the performance of the decade so far, he absolutely has my vote for best actor of 2023. The surprise star was RDJ, not because I doubted his acting ability but just because of how incredible he was, everytime Strauss appeared he captured me immediately and I just couldn’t take my eyes off him, very deserving of a Best Supporting Actor nomination and win in my opinion. I won’t list every actor and actress that made an impact in this film because literally everybody does, supporting actor is the best term for them as everybody, and I mean everybody gives a memorable, meaningful and brilliant performance while also elevating Murphy’s character and acting even more, the best use of a supporting cast I’ve ever seen.
It may not be my favourite Christopher Nolan film, yet. But it’s the absolute best crafted piece of art Nolan has ever done, the actual way Oppenheimer is shot, the fucking fantastic dialogue keeps every scene intriguing, meaningful and memorable like I mentioned before. Some of my favourite scenes are simply those quiet but deafening moments where Robert Oppenheimer lives with his actions and has horrifying visions of what he’s created. The speech he makes after the “successful” bombing is an all time favourite scene for me, the sound design is the best I’ve ever in a film and it’s phenomenal in that moment, it’s phenomenal in every single scene. God this entire film is just outstanding.
I’m going to rewatch Oppenheimer at some point before the end of the year and yeah I could absolutely see it becoming one of my favourites, it’s already perfect. No notes.
