Michael Chaves finds a fair balance between tension-building and an evocative sense of dread in 'The Nun II' but unfortunately isn't able to build that into an overall scary and effective horror sequel, though it's one that's slightly stronger than its predecessor.

Here, Valak makes an unsurprising return that forces a reunion between Taissa Farmiga's Irene and Jonas Bloquet's Maurice, the latter still being unknowingly possessed while the former is now joined by Storm Reid's unnecessary newcomer Debra. Reid's a good performer overall but her character felt horribly out of place and winds up contributing very little of merit.

Thankfully, the titular demon is still unnerving, especially when lurking down dimly lit hallways and sporting a great, killer smile. Sadly, most of these sequences build up for far too long, inevitably devolving into a cheap jump scare that you can sense a mile away. This seems to be the go-to tactic for most horror films lately, a major reason why I find little to love in them.

Regardless, there is a pretty palpable atmosphere here, one that can get under your skin occasionally, but the story feels stilted and disconnected in a lot of ways and leads to some questionable and random moments of horror that hold little weight. 'The Nun II' finds a few areas of improvement but ends up mostly bogged down by the same issues - overlong scares that don't connect, so-so acting, and a runtime that's a bit too long in the tooth for what Chaves and his team are going for.
