everyone say thank you to damien chazelle for showing us once again how much chemistry emma stone and ryan gosling have. i mean, talk about authenticity; sometimes you have to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to reach the heights that were unreachable until now. it’s a heartbreaking, gut-wrenching, beautiful story of modern love, and what it means to let that love go. it’s upbeat and has that very vintage-musical feel too it without be unnecessary cheesy and corny. it’s unique, but comfortable in a sense that everything you’re watching you’ve probably seen before (a coffee shop, a movie theatre, a pier). for the first 45 minutes, it’s a warm, LA-colored blanket. and then that blanket is ripped off of you and you’re shoved into the real world. for those of us that are suckers for happy endings, i’d bet $100 that you have a massive love-hate relationship with this film. me on the other hand? i respect the realism and chazelle’s guts to go against the status quo and what probably would have made perfect sense in this type of movie. if anything, i think it’s what makes this film so good.
