Imagine the whole opening scene from UP but make it the entire movie itself and you got La La Land. Chazelle’s first movie Whiplash I think it’s a near perfect and La La Land is no doubt a musical masterpiece. The influence on Singin with The Rain and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is big here and this has probably the best romantic character based couple I have ever seen. Mia and Sebastian is such a relatable but flawed characteristics that makes them very iconic. The musical numbers reminds me of both Broadway and old Hollywood soundtracks from the 1950s and it’s all thanks to Chazelle’s masterful work that makes me think this came out 40 to 50 years ago. Probably has the most perfect ending of the 2010s. This is easily my favorite musicals and better on the rewatch.
