Alright! Now we're talkin. After a lukewarm reaction to Scream 3, some time has passed and I must say I appreciate it more. Watching a big giallo movie (Deep Red) in between helped me understand the genre's influence on the third Scream. Wes was definitely up to something clever there.
Scream 4 though. Damn. I am all over this one. All the meta stuff, all the references, all the cameos. I love it. And the humor. Right from the beginning. “You’re not cheating on your wife if you're eating my lemon squares, Sheriff.” Amazing. Gale with the absolute power move eating a square in front of the deputy's face. Rory Culkin. Alison Brie. I lowkey was hoping Alison would end up being the killer, just given how unintentionally diabolical she can be on Community. Hayden Panettiere, a big crush of mine from the Heroes days. Aimee Teegarden from Friday Night Lights. It is so nice to see all these faces on screen again.
Is this line a possible super subtle Friends gag? After talking about Courtney Cox, Ghostface says “Friends count, but it's the family ties that cut deep.” Am I overanalyzing that line? I don't care if I am, I love all the in jokes here. How bout that reference to 1996 Scream when Rory Culkin is in the chair. Oh and, "You can't kill me. There are rules! I mean, I'm gay, you know... If that helps...."
I am so excited to check out all the movies Kirby references during her quiz now. Especially Peeping Tom. Also, all the internet social media stuff is so prescient, but I don't need to tell you that. "How do you think people become famous any more? You don't have to achieve anything. You just gotta have fucked up shit happen to you."
A little Halloween II there at the final hospital scene. Maybe even Friday the 13th Part III in the barn. Hell yeah! I could go on. I noted in my original review of Scream that I predicted a positive correlation between how many horror movies you have seen and how much you will like the movie. Well, now that I have seen more horror I think I will appreciate the first movie a lot more. And perhaps the new Scream movie too, which I'm hoping to check out in the theaters soon!
