There’s a review of the original I wrote years ago begging for the sequel announced to not be real. Considering the level of sequels we’ve gotten over the years, despite what I think of this final product, I still don’t blame myself from that time for being so pessimistic. However I’ll put my hands up and admit, I had a blast with this, warts and all! This is honestly a very ambitious sequel. Ambitious that it throws everything it can, some of it doesn’t work which is to be expected with a sequel made nearly forty years later. But the stuff that does work, holy hell am I glad it does! The highlight for me are the effects and style of the film. Awkward cgi here and there but the overall use of practical effects and makeup made this so much more enjoyable and interesting than had this come out in the 2000s and or 2010s when Burton was more willing to throw everything onto a computer. I was honestly impressed with Michael Keaton coming back to the role and he does it justice (if we had to sacrifice a shitty return for his Batman for an awesome return as Beetlejuice then I can live with that). Other standouts include Catherine O’Hara and Willem DaFoe (obviously, I mean come on). I wish they could’ve tightened up the script and maybe put a lot more focus on Monica Belucchi instead as the main villain but, as I said, the ambition extends to the fault of the script, I get it, you take the good with the bad. Still, the fact I was not dreading every second is a testament to the strengths of this film. It’s been years since I’ve seen a new Burton film remind me of why we love the best from him. Not his strongest movie of course, but it does remind me of Batman Returns in being such a batshit sequel that even when it doesn’t work, the stuff that does must be remembered for it’s ambition and creativity.
